Removing Contaminates From Drinking Water with a Water Filter Jug

There are many water filtration systems in today’s marketplace. The most commonly advertised are a water filter jug, a filter canister that attaches to your water faucet, and an under counter water filter. All three utilize a cartridge filter through which tap water passes. Some, but not all, remove impurities by use of a biological process, chemical process, or barrier, which traps particles as the water, passes through. A few of the newer filter systems are now capable of removing bacteria, viruses, nitrates, sulfates, and cysts, but most are only capable of removing fluoride, chlorine, lead, zinc, copper, and other metals or sediments. Activated carbon filters or de-ionizing crystals are used in some filters, as well. These water filtration systems are not to be confused with tablets used to kill harmful viruses such as rotavirus and Hepatitis A.

Water filter jugs or carafes and canisters that attach to the faucet are the easiest to replace the filter as needed and work very well. The filter jugs have the disadvantage of needing frequent refilling. Under counter models, which install on the cold water line are not easy to put in unless you are a plumbing expert. While this type is great for those who need a constant flow of purified water, the filters are more difficult to replace compared to those on the pitcher and faucet-type filtration systems. Whole house filtration systems are ideal, but more expensive. The filter medium will need to be replaced the same as any other water purification process.

Filters designed for point-of-use, such as those for water filter jugs and under counter water filter systems are found at most big box home improvement stores and house and home retailers on the Internet. User reviews are a good source for finding the brand and model suitable for your needs and price-comparison shopping will further help select the one that works well for the best price.
