Use Decorative or Plain Glass Table Lamps

One of the great versatile room furnishing accessories is the table lamp. It may be used to provide illumination which is obviously its primary purpose, but it may also be used as a decorative object as well. With the many different materials that are used when designing table lamps the range of choice is enormous.

One of the most versatile materials available is glass and there are a lot of different types of glass table lamps being offered for sale, both as antiques and modern contemporary. It is a type that will never go out of favour.

One of the earliest types of table lamps made in large numbers, and certainly one of the most enduring is the Tiffany table lamp. This is a lamp that features a stained glass lamp shade that featured colored glass that resulted in a highly decorative appearance. The lamp looks sensational when placed in a room that catches the natural light and then, when the lamp is turned on, the light turns the lamp into an even more impressive feature in the room.

But stained glass lamps are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to imaginative ways in which glass is used.

Milk glass and frosted glass make extremely effective lamp shades, suitable for diffusing the light and softening the glow from the lamp. The surface of the glass may be painted with decorative designs to add some decorative interest.

But the glass does not necessarily have to be confined to the lamp shade. When it is used as part of the lamp base it certainly adds to the character of the piece. Colored glass is a popular option but so is hobnailed glass, amber glass and glass beads. In each of these cases the glass may be shaped or distorted to provide a more decorative effect.

To plan on using a glass table lamp in your home is only the first step in coming up with something that will suit your décor and decorative theme. They cover the full gamut from traditional to modern contemporary and highly decorative to understated and plain.
